Olaplex No.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum Review

There’s really nothing that sucks more than feeling like you’re ultimately on the other side of a very stressful time in your life, only to find that your hair has also experienced said stress in some form or another.

Long story short: my hair was my full luscious crown, I looked like a black version of Cynthia doll from Rugrats (this may be a bit dramatic, but you know what I mean.)

Fairy knots, breaks and split ends were the name of the game. And since I had way too much, I honestly didn’t have time to see a stylist for some much needed treatment and trimming, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

Luckily, a sample of Olaplex’s new No.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum had just arrived on my doorstep ahead of its March 31 launch — the time had come.

Before I get into my all day wash tutorial, I want to point out that this serum not only helps repair current damage, but it also helps prevent it from happening in the future and protects against pollution. I will leave the famous colorist and ambassador of Olaplex Christine Brown explain exactly how the formula works.

“No. 9 Bond Protector nourishing hair serum contains an antioxidant red seaweed extract from the south of France and a film-forming polymer to neutralize free radicals,” she shares with In the style. “UVA and UVB rays act as a shield against pollution, protecting hair from breakage and protecting against heat styling up to 450° Fahrenheit. Infused with Olalpex’s revolutionary multi-patented technology, these active ingredients work [together] to nourish, repair existing damage, while protecting hair from future damage.”

To make sure the product soaked into my hair, I started with a clarifying shampoo, followed by a detangling conditioner in the shower.

Then I applied a generous amount of a deep conditioning treatment from roots to ends, went under the steamer for about 20-30 minutes, then rinsed. After my hair was towel-dried, I applied about two pumps (you really don’t need more than that) of the No.9 serum from roots to ends, as recommended by Brown.

I didn’t find it particularly hydrating, so I finished my usual styling routine (oil, leave-in, twists – you know the drill). Once my hair was dry and detangled, I didn’t expect a miracle. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t notice way less hair on the floor (i.e. less breakage). Also, my curls were shinier and bouncy.

“Textured hair has more disulfide bonds, so our hair is more susceptible to environmental, mechanical, and chemical damage,” says Brown.

That said, I made the serum a mainstay of my routine, and my curls have only gotten better since.
