Chances are your hair has lost a bit of shine from this salt, chlorine, and sun-soaked time of year. So we asked a few world-renowned experts for their top beauty tips for summer, including what products to stock in your arsenal for healthy, shiny hair all season long and beyond.

“During the warmer months, we tend to get more damage to our hair, weather skipping in the pool or the ocean, or just hanging out in the sun,” said Tania Whittier, hairstylist at Wick Salon based in Los Angeles. THR. “It’s best to make sure your hair is properly moisturized and one way to do that is to use lightweight leave-in conditioners, even while wearing a hat. Applying humectants or oils to the hair will also help stop that dry, brittle feeling that is common in the summer.

Whittier is one of the few specialists who work with the most natural hair products possible. She is revered by a host of clients including Kristen Bell, Maude Apatow and Maya Rudolph for her clean, non-toxic and highly personalized approach to hair color and her coveted hair straightening treatment for hair without puffiness or frizz (without headaches, no strong chemical odors and no watery eyes).

“Treating your hair with a non-toxic straightening treatment will help add amino acids to the hair protecting it from the elements,” she continues. “And be sure to avoid using products that contain sulfates to help prolong the benefits.”

When it comes to straightening treatments, Whitter recommends people consider safer options. “It’s always best to avoid formaldehyde and any other form of aldehyde because when heated to 450 degrees it can become a poisonous gas.”

Chad Kenyon, colorist at Ollin Salon, is a master of natural high shine color, as seen on clients such as Salma Hayek, Melissa McCarthy and Carla Gugino. With a focus on maintaining healthy hair, Kenyon is sought after for its signature Colormelt Technique which incorporates Balayage and HairStrobing to rejuvenate and enhance facial features while delivering lust-worthy color.

“We need to nourish and protect our hair more than ever during the beloved summer months,” Kenyon said. THR. “Hard metals in tap water, chlorine, and salt water can all damage hair and dull color. After getting out of chlorine or salt water, always do your best to rinse your hair in the shower so those heavy minerals or chemicals don’t linger too long.

Avoid breakage with silk hair ties

“What I’ve noticed with new clients is that they often have brittle hair because they use old-fashioned rubber bands or hair ties for ponytails,” Kenyon says. “It’s best to use a silk tie with a wider flat elastic which helps put less stress on the hair.”
